Pick the Union Ultra if you're an intermediate through expert rider focused on freestyle and need its smaller size option. Pick the Union STR if you're a beginner or intermediate rider who wants an all-mountain and park strap binding at a lower price. Both are men's bindings, and both have a numerical flex rating of 6. Paying more for the Ultra is not simply buying a higher flex number.

We haven't tried these two for this comparison.

Freestyle focus versus a broader first setup

The Ultra is aimed at freestyle riding and has a medium-stiff flex. The STR covers all-mountain and park use with a medium flex. Start with the Ultra when you want support for deliberate freestyle movements; start with the STR when you want a versatile first setup for learning turns and beginning park laps.

For an experienced rider who spends the day working on freestyle movements, the Ultra's purpose aligns with the purchase. For someone progressing through turns and beginning to explore the park, the STR's intended audience is the more natural fit.

Match the binding to your boots and board as well as your riding plans. Supportive boots and a demanding board can make the Ultra part of a firm setup that rewards active input. If you prefer relaxed riding and easier ankle movement, the STR's medium flex is the more natural place to start.

Straps and footbeds for your stance

The Ultra uses an S11 Duraflex ST baseplate and a molecular bushing with a TPE outsole. The STR uses an S5 Duraflex baseplate and thermoformed EVA cushioning. With either setup, seat the boot fully on the footbed before tightening the straps so the underfoot support and highback line up with your riding stance.

The strap designs also differ, with a Hybrid ankle strap on the Ultra and an Exoframe ankle strap on the STR. Try the bindings with your own boots to see how those straps sit and whether they apply pressure comfortably. A more expensive strap design is not automatically a better match for every boot shape.

The STR includes canting, while the Ultra does not. If footbed angle is important to your stance preference, that is another reason to inspect the actual bindings rather than assuming the Ultra adds every feature.

Small boots and mounting need attention

The Ultra comes in Small, Medium and Large, while the STR comes in Medium and Large. If you need a Small, the Ultra has a straightforward sizing advantage within this pair. Choose from the boot-size range for the specific binding, then make sure the straps center properly and the boot rests securely on the footbed.

The STR supports 2x4, 4x4 and The Channel mounting, giving it useful flexibility across common boards. If you already own a compatible board and Medium or Large fits your boots, that makes the STR an economical route to a complete setup. Put the remaining budget toward boots that hold your feet comfortably.

Use the correct disks and hardware for the binding and follow the board's mounting instructions. Set a comfortable stance before fine-tuning the straps, and check that toe and heel overhang are balanced. For the Ultra, give the Hybrid ankle strap enough adjustment to sit centrally over your boot as you flex into a turn.

Which should you buy

Choose the Ultra for its freestyle focus, smaller size choice and the fit of its specific straps. Choose the STR for beginner-to-intermediate riding when Medium or Large fits and its much lower price is useful.
