Avalanche Beacons
An avalanche beacon sends a signal while you travel and switches to search mode if a partner is buried. Modern transceivers use three antennas, which makes the final stages of a search more precise than older designs. Look at how clearly the display shows distance and direction, because you will be reading it under real stress. Features such as marking multiple burials help in groups, but a simple unit you have practiced with beats a complex one you have not. Replace batteries before they run low and check that the harness fits over your layers. A beacon is only one part of a rescue kit, and it does not replace avalanche training.
