Avalanche Shovels

In a burial, most of the rescue time goes into digging, and avalanche debris sets up hard. That is why a metal blade is the usual recommendation, since plastic can skip off or break in frozen snow. A larger blade moves more snow with each stroke but adds weight and takes up more room in your pack. An extendable shaft gives you better leverage, and a D or T grip is a matter of what feels secure in gloves. Some models switch to a hoe mode for faster clearing. Practice assembling yours with cold hands, because seconds count and a sticky joint is the wrong thing to discover during a real search.
