Backcountry Ski Packs

A backcountry pack has to carry a shovel, probe, skins and extra layers without getting in the way on the way down. For day tours, many skiers look at something around 25 to 35 liters, with larger sizes for long or hut-based trips. A dedicated pocket keeps avalanche gear quick to reach rather than buried under your lunch. Diagonal or A-frame carry straps should work with gloves on. A hip belt keeps the load from swinging in turns, and a back panel zip saves digging through the top. Try loading the pack with your real kit before heading out, since an empty one tells you little about how it rides.
