Avalanche Probes
A probe pinpoints a buried partner once a beacon search brings you close, so it needs to assemble fast and slide through dense debris. Lengths of about 240 to 300 centimeters suit most riders, with longer ones useful where deep burials are more likely. Aluminum is durable and cost-friendly, while carbon saves weight at a higher price. Look for a pull cable with a locking end that you can work in thick gloves. Depth markings along the shaft help you decide how much digging lies ahead. Store the probe somewhere easy to reach in your pack, and rehearse deploying it until you no longer have to think about the steps.
